What documents does my baby need to leave Canada?

A provincial birth certificate first, then a travel document. A Canadian-born baby is a Canadian citizen and can be issued a Canadian passport; some families instead obtain a travel document from their own embassy. Both take weeks rather than days, so register the birth immediately after delivery.

The order they have to happen in

  1. Register the birth with the province — the hospital starts this, you complete it.
  2. Receive the birth certificate. Nothing else can be applied for without it.
  3. Apply for a Canadian passport, or for your own country's travel document at its consulate.
  4. Check whether your own country requires the birth to be reported to it as well.
