The route in outline
A first-time visitor to Canada normally applies for a Temporary Resident Visa on form IMM 5257, submits biometrics at a visa application centre, and waits for a decision. An Electronic Travel Authorisation is a faster alternative but is open only to travellers who already hold, or recently held, a qualifying visa — and only when arriving by air.

The application, step by step
- 01
Create an IRCC account and start the application
The application is completed online. The account holds the forms, the uploads and every letter Canada sends back about the case.

Assemble and upload the supporting documents
The checklist above, plus anything the online form asks for once your answers are entered. Incomplete uploads are the most common cause of delay.
- 03
Pay the fees and book biometrics
Fees are paid to Canada online. A biometrics instruction letter follows, and the appointment is at a visa application centre.
- 04
Attend the biometrics appointment
Fingerprints and a photograph. Biometrics remain valid for ten years, so a later trip may not need them again.
- 05
Wait for the decision, then send the passport if approved
An approved application is followed by a request to submit the passport for the visa to be placed in it.
