What happens if there are medical complications?

Canadian hospitals treat an emergency regardless of insurance status and bill afterwards. Emergency treatment is not withheld from an uninsured patient in Canada. That is a genuine protection, and it is not the same as the care being free — the hospital invoices the patient afterwards at its uninsured rate.
