Is Canadian health insurance available to visitors?
No. Provincial health insurance covers residents, not visitors, and the baby's own coverage as a citizen does not extend to the mother's care. Visitors buy private medical travel insurance instead — but most policies exclude pregnancy, and nearly all exclude a planned delivery, so read the exclusions before buying.
What is and is not covered
- Provincial plans (OHIP in Ontario, and its equivalents) cover residents only.
- A Canadian-born baby is a citizen, but coverage for a newborn is a provincial matter and does not reach back to cover the mother's delivery.
- Standard travel insurance almost always excludes childbirth where the travel was planned around it.
