Does a Canadian-born child give the parents residency?
No. A Canadian-born child gives a parent no immigration status, no visa and no right to remain in Canada. A citizen child may sponsor a parent for permanent residence only once they are eighteen and meet an income requirement. Anyone who suggests otherwise is describing something Canadian law does not provide.
What the child's citizenship does not do
- It does not extend a parent's authorised stay by a single day.
- It does not create a right to work or study in Canada.
- It does not stop a parent being refused entry on a later trip.
The one route that does exist, much later
Under the Parents and Grandparents Program a Canadian citizen aged eighteen or over can sponsor a parent, if they meet a minimum income level for three consecutive years and the program is open to new applications that year. That is a route available to the child in adulthood, not a benefit available to the parents now.
